Review: Leodis - Rendevouz

Monday, June 30, 2014 | Posted by: Tomorrowaudio

Leeds based producer Leodis with his latest release on Foreign Language Records.

Leodis “Rendezvous” is a track which is almost entirely focused on rhythm, with little going on throughout the track melodically. It’s rich in interesting and familiar samples which add the required layer on top of the back beat in order to retain interest. The back beat itself is quite simple, but complex enough to make the listener bob their heads in satisfaction; Leodis is constantly tweaking the beat throughout the song by means of instrumentation, EQ sweeps, and small changes in the actual rhythm which prevents from becoming monotonous. The rhythm has so much room to breathe without being boring, freeing up space for Leodis to add in more complex layered samples which truly is the strength of the track.

My favourite part of the track are the sections between drum loops section which begin with the drums falling out of the mix and a layer of pads are introduced soothing the track briefly, acting as segue ways into a new sample. These act as respites, separating sections and slowing the pace of the track down, allowing Leodis to rebuild it up again and is well executed. My only complaint would be that some of the voicing is lacklustre, but overall a great track.

In addition to the original mix there is also an ISO remix which is overall OK, but is very linear compared to the original mix. It has a larger focus on the drum loop alone rather than the complimenting samples and pads, hence offering a great alternative for those which maybe aren't a fan of the more sporadic original. However I believe it is a lot less interesting to listen to but I wouldn't be disgruntled if it came on whilst I was in earshot as it provides an enjoyable listening experience.
