Kopp is back on hand to deliver a hard hitting EP on Chris Liebing's CLR.
Rhythm and timbre are clearly dominant over melody which is not unusual for Kopp, as his earlier EPs from 2007 share the need to be hammered out onto club floors. There is a vast range of drum and timbre effects throughout the Starbust EP, all with a heavy bass drum back-bone and brought smoothly into the mix via Kopp’s mixing skills.
Despite the repetitive nature of the tracks, there is always something gradually changing or
altering, like the sweeping EQ at the beginning of ‘Drummo’. Each track seems to build up to an
eventual climax using either producing techniques or an increasing number of sounds. However, the
importance of percussive sounds and lack of melody mean that none of the tracks are particularly
memorable. The fact that all the tracks have a similar tempo makes them all seem to blend
together, losing their independence.
It would be nice to hear more panning and recording techniques throughout Starbust, but Kopp has
clearly written these tracks to be performed. He mostly uses LFOs for tension in build
ups and Reverb for a wide atmospheric effect: elements which can be pulled off by a turntable and
live mixing desk. Fans of Kopp with be happy to hear that he has stuck to his roots, as he continues
to lay down heavy rhythm based tracks with a mixture of both digital and audio techniques that will
make his live sets an adrenaline pumping sensation.
